Kenny Tran, standing in his store

Introduction

Roslindale Village Main Street recently had the opportunity to chat with Kenny Tran, the owner of Delicious Yogurt, located right across from Adams Park in the former Social Security Building at 4206 Washington Street. Kenny is celebrating his one-year anniversary of Delicious Yogurt, which opened at the beginning of August 2014. On a typical day the store is packed with people of all ages, attracted by the sparkling interior filled with multi-colored décor, tables, cups, and utensils, along with the boundless varieties of frozen yogurt that come with a choice of 78 varieties of toppings, from dry, to frozen, to fresh fruit cuts. Based on the rave reviews and hundreds of “likes” on Facebook, Kenny and Delicious Yogurt are well on their way to becoming a Roslindale icon, drawing enthusiastic customers from all over the Boston area.

RVMS: What made you open up Delicious Yogurt in Roslindale?

Kenny: “After twelve years as an IT professional, I wanted to change careers and become an entrepreneur by launching my own frozen yogurt business. Originally I had planned to locate in Jamaica Plain but by chance I ran into the real estate agent who was looking for a tenant for the vacant space at the former Social Security building. He convinced me to open up my shop right here at this location, and it has worked out great! Roslindale is a very friendly community and it’s wonderful to see so many families and young people stopping in to Delicious Yogurt to sample the many varieties of products we offer.”

RVMS: How would you describe your business?

Kenny: “Delicious Yogurt is a self-serve arrangement where customers can create their own treats based on twelve different flavors of froyo (frozen yogurt). We change half of the flavors every two weeks based on what is most popular, so that there is always new variety. You can also mix the flavors together at each of the six serving stations, and pour on any combination of the 78 different toppings on the menu. One of the stations is designated as ‘Fun Town Station’, featuring ‘fantastically fun and tasty froyo flavors’ such as Cereal Magic and Party Punch, which are especially rich with calcium and Vitamin D while containing no fat, gluten, artificial flavors, or high fructose corn syrup’. During the summer we also offer many other creations including eight varieties of fresh fruit smoothies, twelve varieties of bubble tea, four flavors of fruit iced tea, and four varieties of organic coffee”.

Our products contain the highest quality no-fat, non-dairy, and low-fat ingredients which, in addition to being refreshing and enjoyable to the taste, help restore and maintain a healthy digestive system and build up calcium. We don’t serve ice cream. Our cups of frozen yogurt contain only about 110 calories”.

RVMS: How is your business involved in the community?

Kenny: “Delicious Yogurt offers special incentives and discounts for various occasions. For example, students at the Irving Middle School who earn straight A’s qualify for a free $5.00 cup. We offer 10% discounts to senior citizens, as well as men and women in the armed services. In addition, Delicious Yogurt acknowledges special occasions and holidays, such as by providing free roses to women on Valentine’s Day. On the counter we have a donation box where people can help the victims of the recent earthquake in Nepal. Our shop joins in with the business community in promotions sponsored by Roslindale Village Main Street such as Customer Appreciation Day and the Holiday Wander”.

RVMS: How many employees do you have and what are your hours?

Kenny: “We currently have four employees at the Roslindale location. Please check out our web site deliciousfroyo.com and our Facebook page for nutrition information and a multitude of color photographs of all of the delicious flavors, toppings, beverages, and specials that we are currently offering. Our staff is always friendly and helpful and will make every effort to see that your visit to Delicious Yogurt is pleasant and enjoyable. We have received many accolades and notes of appreciation from our customers, most of whom we know on a first-name basis. As I celebrate my one-year anniversary in Roslindale, I want to take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to the community for your support and patronage. Our summer hours are 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m.Sunday through Thursday and from 12:00 noon to 10:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Please stop by Delicious Yogurt and try us out!’
