One of the most beloved traditions happening in Roslindale Village takes place this weekend: The Bay State Model Railroad Museum’s Holiday Train Show.  On Saturday, December 5th and Sunday, December 6th from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm each day, this incredible museum opens its doors to hundreds of train collectors and train lovers. Scale models (O, N, HO and HOn3) depict scenes from all across the USA, including some very familiar areas in and around Boston. From the fall foliage colors to the advertisements posted on stores, the attention to detail are some of the reasons people flock to the open house. Admission for children is FREE and Santa will be making an appearance on Sunday at 12:00 pm (he will be at Dandelions Flower Shop which is below the Museum.) There is something about model trains that brings out the kid in all of us and we checked in with Jay Epstein, the Director of Shows for the Museum to get a little bit of behind the scenes info!

How long does it take to assemble one of the train layouts?

It takes years to build our layouts. We have been in our current location since the seventies and we are still working on them!

How often do you change them or add to them?

We are constantly adding and changing things to the layouts. There are always things to be updated, improvements to be made and items to fix.

Will there be anything new this year at the open house?

Besides updates and new scenery on the layouts we have new LED lighting for our ceiling! It h
as made our room far brighter and brought many details on the layouts out!

When we were visiting last year's open house, there seemed to be a lot of engineers moving back and forth between the layouts - how many engineers does it take to keep things running during an open house?

It depends on the layout. I am on the HO layout and it takes about 7-9 people to run the layout.

If someone were interested in joining the club, where do they do that?

The best thing to do is to come to the club when we are open Wednesday evenings. Start talking to the members, spend some time here to see what we do and then decide whether or not to take out a membership application.

If someone wanted to buy something from you, is that possible or do you refer them to local train shops

We do not sell model railroad items. Some local hobby shops include Charles Ro in Malden and Maine Trains in Chelmsford. There are others as well not to mention online shopping such as Trainworld.

And finally, what do you think the never-ending allure of model trains is....almost everyone loves them!

I think the allure of model trains has to do with the rich history of trains in American culture. People find real trains fascinating and miniatures in general so model trains are a perfect fit of both!
