Prospect Ciderworks is Back!

The RVMS Farmers Market Welcomes Back Prospect Ciderworks to the Market

Have you noticed something missing at the farmers market these past few weeks?

Might it be the taste of crisp, refreshing hard cider?

This season is a first in RVMS Farmers Market history where we took advantage of the agricultural event license for “Farmer-Wineries” in Massachusetts. Luckily enough, we had one application from a brand new hard cider start-up located in Roxbury: Prospect Ciderworks. These young entrepreneurs came with a ton of energy, and great organizational skills, and got through the entire licensing process with ease.

Since the RVMS Farmers Market is the only farmers market located in a public park in the City of Boston, the question was raised about a month ago, “If there is no alcohol allowed in the City’s public parks – how are we allowed to sell it?” This is why RVMS had to put Prospect Ciderworks’ vendor space on hold and let them know they needed to meet with the Parks Department to discuss a solution.

And now – they’re back! This week, we found out the Parks Department has approved Prospect Ciderworks to continue to be a vendor with RVMS this season! The Parks Department also let us know that this is the first instance of its kind — Prospect Ciderworks is the first cidery/winery to be able to sell in a public park in Boston, and it could be the start of something bigger for our public parks. Hooray for RVMS making history and making strides for more winery/cidery presence in our City.

This weekend, let’s all give the Prospect Ciderworks team a big pat on the back, and buy as much cider as we can to show how much we missed them at our farmers market!

Roslindale Business Profile: Moreno Auto Collision

Profile: Moreno Auto Collision

At the Washington Street gateway of Roslindale Village near Healy Field is Moreno Auto Collision. Juan Moreno and his wife Ana have owned Moreno Auto Collision (the building and business) in Roslindale for 5 years, but they have been in Boston for 20 years, starting their business in Mattapan.

“We came to Roslindale to stay! We are not just a business – we want to provide a sense of family to this community,” said Ana.

Moreno Auto Collision provides a sense of family in a lot of ways – including reducing worker exposure to toxic chemicals. Not only do they run a successful business, but they have also been recognized by the Boston Public Health Commission for their environmental leadership as they have eliminated the use of hazardous chemicals, replacing them with safer alternatives.

Ana and Juan are also collecting backpacks and school supplies for students in the Dominican Republic for the organization Heartbeats of Love. If you’re interested in donating, the last day to donate a backpack is September 1st.

Fun fact: Moreno Auto Collision provides car rentals for customers undergoing car repair at no extra cost.

Welcome, Roxbury YouthWorks!

We are excited to welcome the Roslindale District Office of Roxbury YouthWorks to the neighborhood!

Roxbury YouthWorks is a community-based non-profit organization whose mission is to help youth caught in cycles of poverty, victimization, and violence to transition successfully to adulthood. They will  be opening their Roslindale District Office at 4262-4264 Washington Street (where Harrison Refrigeration and Big Spin Laundromat used to be), and plan to open in mid-August.

Mia Alvarado, the Executive Director and longtime Roslindale resident, stated that this office will house administrative staff and caseworkers (adding more foot traffic and a lunch crowd). “We spent a lot of time seeking out a new space and are excited to be in Roslindale! We chose Roslindale because there is excellent access to public transportation and the resident and business community is known to be welcoming here. When we have staff events, we look forward to supporting local businesses for catering and more. Roxbury YouthWorks is excited to be part of the Roslindale business community!”

If you are looking for Harrison Refrigeration, please visit their temporary location at 63 Poplar Street (next to the Treasure Chest). They are planning a big move (still in Roslindale) soon, but will be in this space for now if you need to visit our favorite appliance store.
